Abstract
The seminar introduces the key technical features and the multiple applications of optical wireless communications, in the region of visible and infrared light. The talk presents some specific experimental realizations of optical wireless systems, carried out at the laboratories of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna.
Two recent research lines in the area of space communications are described: short-distance on-board communications in satellites, and communications over very long distances, e.g. inter satellite and satellite-to- Earth links.

Bio
Ernesto Ciaramella has more than twenty-five years research experience in optical communications, focused on various topics (components, propagation impairments, systems and networks).
He has been working with industrial companies and research centers in optical communication. He participated in several European and national research projects. He has been coordinator of the EU-FP7 project COCONUT (2012-2015), on coherent systems for WDM PON access networks. He is now principal investigator of ESA-TOWS project, about optical wireless systems for spacecrafts.
Since Nov. 2002 he is Professor at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna University (Full Professor since 2014) where he originated and is leading a research group on optical wireless and fiber systems.
