Following a short presentation on OneWeb as a new player in the telecom satellite environment, the concept of new space will be introduced.  Presentation will then focus on antenna design for space presenting the key design and manufacturing challenges and the state of the art. In the second part the seminary will cover the main aspects of the “devolution” of traditional design approaches, and the evolution towards new, more flexible, systems. The impact of innovative technologies like additive manufacturing, active antennas, digital beamforming, will be presented and analysed in the framework of a completely revolutionized space industry in which Low Orbit Satellite systems will have a prominent position

SPEAKER: Sara Mugnaini
Principal Engineer – Advanced Payload Space Infrastructure, Development and Partnerships, OneWeb

Sara Mugnaini received a Master degree (Laurea, cum laude) in Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in April 2004 and a Ph.D. in Applied Electromagnetics from the same university in March 2008. In 2006 she was a visiting scholar at the ElectroScience laboratory, Ohio State University, USA. During her academic years Dr Mugnaini main research activity concerned innovative antenna design, and she specialized further in antenna design for space applications during her industrial career, first at Airbus Defence and Space from 2009 to 2015, and then at Inmarsat, where she held a position as Senior Antenna Specialist in the Space Segment till September 2019. Dr Mugnaini joined One Web in October 2019 as a Principal Engineer in the Technology Strategy and Partnership Team. In 2020 she briefly joined the European Space Agency in the UK (ECSAT), as a contractor, as part of the Ground Segment ARTES Team and come back to OneWeb in the position at the beginning of 2021. In OneWeb she is now leading the RF Technology roadmap for both Ground and Space segment.
