The SAMPLE project aims to innovate training and development of medical devices in the orthopedic field by leveraging technologies such as Augmented Reality and robotics. Current surgical training is limited by time and resources, hindering the introduction of new technologies and compromising the quality of care. SAMPLE addresses these challenges by creating an advanced, modular simulation environment adaptable to various surgical scenarios and training levels.
The project is structured into three components: SAMPLE TRAINING, for medical staff education; SAMPLE WORKFLOW, to define medical device requirements; SAMPLE REPOSITORY, to collect and digitize data on the adoption of innovative technologies.
The system will combine physical and digital elements in an immersive way, improving accuracy, ergonomics, and safety in surgical procedures. The consortium includes the University of Pisa, Orthokey S.r.l. (project leader), MaVI, Domed, and SBE, bringing expertise in clinical, electronic, and interface development fields.
SAMPLE will also integrate existing solutions such as the ROBIN robotic system and the ARTS AR headset to create a surgical simulation environment for orthopedics entirely “Made in Tuscany“. The project promotes the effective adoption of emerging healthcare technologies, enhancing innovation and training in the medical sector.
